How to Choose a Candle Worth Buying

A good candle is one of life's small, reliable pleasures. The right one fills a room, burns clean for hours, and smells as good in its last hour as its first. Here's what to look for, so the next candle you buy is one you'll be glad you did.

Start with the wax

Wax is the fuel, and it decides more than people realise. Natural waxes like soy and coconut burn slowly and cleanly, which means less soot, a longer life, and a scent that carries evenly through the whole burn. They're the honest starting point for something you'll have lit in your home for hours at a time.

Then look at how it's scented

A well-made candle is scented to release slowly and evenly, so the fragrance develops through the wax and stays with you from the first burn to the last. The best scents have a shape to them, a fresh opening, a heart, and a base that lingers, rather than a single flat note.

Our Fig Tree candle is a good example: it opens green and sharp with fig leaf, softens into ripe fruit, then settles onto cedar and fig wood. That movement is what makes a scent feel alive in a room.

Mind the wick

The wick is small and easy to overlook, and it makes an enormous difference. Sized well to the vessel and the wax, it burns to a full, even pool, giving you the whole candle rather than a tunnel down the middle. It's an unglamorous detail that decides whether you get a clean, generous burn.

Wood and cotton wicks both work beautifully when they're sized properly. A wooden wick gives a soft crackle as it burns; a cotton wick gives a steadier, quieter flame. Neither is better, they're just different characters.

Consider the vessel

A good vessel is designed to outlast the candle, to be cleaned out and reused, or refilled. Ours are made to be kept and refilled, which is kinder to your shelf and to the planet than another jar in the recycling. It's a nice feeling, keeping something rather than binning it.

Buy fewer, better ones

There's a lot to be said for owning a few well-made candles rather than a drawer full. A candle poured with good wax, a considered fragrance, a correctly sized wick and a vessel worth keeping gives you more pleasure, and better value, because you'll happily burn all of it.
